"Deliver Us From Evil" Series - Week 2

Posted by on Friday, January 30, 2004 (CST)

Lesson preview for Week 2 (Sun., Feb 1) of the current class series based on the book - "Deliver Us from Evil" by Ravi Zacharias.

We will continue with the second video in the "deliver us from evil" series.   This week's objective is to look at the dreams we once had as a nation, where we are at present, and where we are headed.  this is precisely the kind of understanding that is needed - a rigorous and honest analysis - so that when we cry out to God to "deliver us from evil," we will understand the ramifications and know that the light and liberty of God and His grace is offered to all of us.  diligence and perseverance will be needed so that our minds and hearts can stay on course with the truth of what God wants us to know.

The perspective the author wants us to have is to understand that nations have dreams, and it is good for the people of every nation to measure those dreams against reality.  with all the writings and all the dreams this nation has had, possibly one ideal captures our dreams better than any other:  the challenge and the task of reconciling liberty with law - the noble goal of bringing our bodies, our intellect, and our minds into conformity with the laws and precepts of God.

We will consider the following questions:

  1. Ravi Zacharias observes that the theories of Charles Darwin and Karl Marx were conceived during a time of "utopian zeal."  How do such theories reveal the idealistic beliefs of modern culture?  How do they demonstrate society's loss of faith in God?
  2. In answer to the question, "what was America "created" for, the highly regarded scholar Russell Kirk traces the roots of American order through four civilizations of the past: (1) Athens, (2) Rome, (3) Jerusalem, and (4) London.  Why do you think he chose these particular cultures?  What values or perspectives would we be most to observe from each of them?
